{{Header}}
{{Summary1}} Critics sometimes argue that several blessings pronounced by Oliver Cowdery contained false prophecies because some promised events did not occur during the recipients' lifetimes. The blessings given to Orson Hyde, Lyman Johnson, and William Smith, like many patriarchal and personal blessings, contain conditional promises, symbolic language, or prophecies whose fulfillment may extend beyond mortality. Later published versions of some blessings were edited for clarity without changing their essential meaning. These blessings do not provide convincing evidence of a failed prophecy when read in their historical, doctrinal, and literary context.
Orson Hyde blessing. Oliver Cowdery proceeded and called upon the Lord to smile upon him and that his faith '''shall be''' perfect, and that the blessings promised '''shall be''' realized. |-
|}

====The word "shall" was changed to "may"====

The majority of the changes replace a phrase like "shall" with one like "may." The critics presumably wish to mislead the unwary into believing that the initial version made unconditional promises or prophecies, while the ''History of the Church'' version adds a conditional element. Yet, the critics are simply ignorant of word usage in the early 1800s. Webster's 1828 dictionary noted of "shall":

<blockquote>
In the second and third persons [i.e., when applied to another person], ''shall'' implies a promise, command or determination. "You shall receive your wages," "he shall receive his wages," imply that you or he ought to receive them; but usage gives these phrases the force of a promise in the person uttering them.<ref>{{Webster1828|article=shall}}</ref>
</blockquote>

Thus, "shall" indicates a promise ''or'' command&mdash;and, LDS theology (with its strong emphasis on moral agency) always holds that man is free to accept or reject the commandments or promises of God. The ''History of the Church'' makes this fact more unambiguous for the modern reader, perhaps, in its use of "may." But, this change in no way changes the content of the blessing.

In fact, the ordination given to Brigham Young on the same day includes similar promises but usually uses "may" rather than "shall." Since Martin Harris gave Brigham's blessing, while Orson's was given by Oliver Cowdery, this difference is probably best explained by the habits in language between the two men. (Compare [[Revelation after Joseph Smith/David Whitmer/Brigham Young ordination blessing|Brigham Young ordination blessing]].) Latter-day Saints do not believe that such blessings are generally word-for-word dictation from God. Instead, they are the speaker's best attempt to put into words the information communicated to them by the Holy Spirit (e.g., {{s||D&C|1|24}}). Those people who edited the ''History of the Church'' understood this.

====Critics reading through their own theology and ideas====

This is another excellent example of sectarian critics' tendency to read LDS scripture and language through their own lenses&mdash;the critics are often Calvinists, believing in God's absolute predestination of events and acts. But, LDS theology has never seen the matter that way. Instead, God makes promises or commands to mortals who may choose to accept or reject them. As the Lord said elsewhere:

:49 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that when I give a commandment to any of the sons of men to do a work unto my name, and those sons of men go with all their might and with all they have to perform that work, and cease not their diligence, and their enemies come upon them and hinder them from performing that work, behold, it behooveth me to require that work no more at the hands of those sons of men, but to accept of their offerings....<br>51 Therefore, for this cause have I accepted the offerings of those whom I commanded to build up a city and a house unto my name, in Jackson county, Missouri, and were hindered by their enemies, saith the Lord your God. ({{s||D&C|124|49,51}}

{{SeeAlso|Joseph_Smith/Prophecies/David Patten to serve mission|Independence_temple_to_be_built_"in_this_generation"|l2=Independence temple|l1=David Patten to serve a mission}}

====This is not a false prophecy====

Critics go further in claiming that the blessing which says that Hyde "shall stand on the earth and bring souls till Christ comes" proves that this is a false prophecy.

But the blessing nowhere asserts that Hyde will be a mortal until the Second Coming. Unlike many Christian theologies, the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not place the abode of the dead in another world or realm. Likewise, it does not cause the preaching of the gospel and the redeeming of souls to cease with death. Missionary work continues in the spirit world after death, and the "spirit world" to which the dead go is ''on earth''. Brigham Young said:

:When you lay down this tabernacle [i.e., mortal body], where are you going? Into the spiritual world. Are you going into Abraham's bosom. No, not anywhere nigh there, but into the spirit world. '''Where is the spirit world? It is right here.''' Do the good and evil spirits go together? Yes, they do. Do they both inhabit one kingdom? Yes, they do. Do they go to the sun? No. Do they go beyond the boundaries of this organized earth? No, they do not. They are brought forth upon this earth, for the express purpose of inhabiting it to all eternity. Where else are you going? Nowhere else, only as you may be permitted....

<blockquote>
Father Smith and Carlos and brother Partridge, yes, and every other good Saint, are just as busy in the spirit world as you and I are here. They can see us, but we cannot see them unless our eyes were opened. What are they doing there? They are preaching, preaching all the time, and preparing the way for us to hasten our work in building temples here and elsewhere, and to go back to Jackson County and build the great temple of the Lord. They are hurrying to get ready by the time that we are ready and we are all hurrying to get ready by the time our Elder Brother is ready {{ea}}.<ref>{{JDfairwiki|author=Brigham Young|vol=3|disc=51|start=370}}</ref>
</blockquote>

Thus, faithful apostles would continue their work among the wicked (either as a mortal or among the spirits) until Christ comes.
====Given that Lyman Johnson apostatized and forsook his role in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, any promise made to him in a blessing would have been forfeited====
It is claimed that the ordination blessing given to Lyman Johnson of the Twelve was a false prophecy:

<blockquote>
that he should bear the tidings of salvation to nations, tongues, and people, until the utmost corners of the earth shall hear the tidings; and that he shall be a witness of the things of God to nations and tongues, and that holy angels shall administer to him occasionally; and that no power of the enemy shall prevent him from going forth and doing the work of the Lord; and that he shall live until the gathering is accomplished, according to the holy prophets; and he shall be like unto Enoch; and his faith shall be like unto his; and he shall be called great among all the living; and Satan shall tremble before him; and he shall see the Savior come and stand upon the earth with power and great glory."<ref>{{HC1|vol=2|start=188}}</ref>
</blockquote>

Given that Lyman Johnson apostatized and forsook his role in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, any promise made to him in a blessing would have been forfeited.

===="Live until the gathering is accomplished"====

Even so, there is nothing in the blessing which should be classified as "failed" (though some aspects await fulfillment).

The blessing is not clear about which gathering is being referred to. Is it the gathering of all the tribes of Israel? Is it the gathering of the Jews to Jerusalem? These events were not to be completed within Johnson's day, or even our own.

But, there are other "gatherings" discussed and promised. Is it the gathering of the Saints into Zion? Johnson certainly lived to see the Saints gathered to Kirtland and the blessings of the temple within three years, in 1836. His lifetime would also see the gathering of the Saints to Salt Lake City, even if he did not participate as a member of the Twelve. Critics must rule out ''all'' of these potential readings if they are to label this as "false prophecy." They cannot do so.

===="Shall see the Savior come and stand upon the earth"====

This promise nowhere asserts that Johnson will be a mortal when he sees this glorious event. This promise could be fulfilled whether Johnson is alive or dead. This promise has not yet been fulfilled, but every Christian who awaits Jesus' return must admit that its fulfillment lies in the future, when "all flesh shall see me [Christ] together" at His Second Coming (see {{s||D&C|101|23}}, compare {{b||Isaiah|40|5}}, {{b||Luke|3|6}}).

<blockquote>
That he may be purified in heart, that he may have communion with God. That he may be equal with his brethren in holding the keys of this ministry That he may be kept and be instrumental in leading Israel forth, that he may be delivered from the hands of those who seek to destroy him. That he may be enabled to bear testimony to the nations, that Jesus lives. That he may stand in the midst of pestilence and destruction, he shall be mighty in the hands of God, in bringing about the restoration of Israel. The nations shall rejoice at the greatness of the gifts which God has bestowed upon him, That his tongue shall be loosed, he shall have power to do great things in the name of Jesus. He shall be preserved and remain on the earth until Christ shall come to take vengeance on the wicked. Confirmed.
</blockquote>

Since William Smith apostatized and was not true to his calling as an apostle, any promise made to him is arguably forfeit. However, one can be "preserved" to the truth, faith, salvation, etc., and still be dead. If William was faithful, he would have continued his work among the wicked (either as a mortal or among the spirits) until Christ comes, at which point William would be resurrected to meet Him. In either case, William would be on the earth.

Despite this, the only line that is even potentially problematic is the claim that "[h]e shall be preserved and remain on the earth until Christ shall come...."

The promise says nothing about William remaining a mortal on the earth. He is to be preserved despite pestilence and destruction; to be mighty in the hands of God. How, though, can he "remain on the earth"?

Unlike many Christian theologies, the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not place the abode of the dead in another world or realm. The "spirit world" to which the dead go '''is on earth'''. Brigham Young taught:

<blockquote>
When you lay down this tabernacle [i.e., mortal body], where are you going? Into the spiritual world. Are you going into Abraham's bosom. No, not anywhere nigh there, but into the spirit world. '''Where is the spirit world? It is right here.''' Do the good and evil spirits go together? Yes, they do. Do they both inhabit one kingdom? Yes, they do. Do they go to the sun? No. Do they go beyond the boundaries of this organized earth? No, they do not. They are brought forth upon this earth, for the express purpose of inhabiting it to all eternity. Where else are you going? Nowhere else, only as you may be permitted...

</blockquote>

Thus, one can be "preserved" to the truth, faith, salvation, etc., and still be dead. If William was faithful, he would have continued his work among the wicked (either as a mortal or among the spirits) until Christ comes, at which point William would be resurrected to meet Him. These blessings do not provide convincing evidence of failed prophecy when they are read in their historical, doctrinal, and literary context.
Orson Hyde blessing. Oliver Cowdery proceeded and called upon the Lord to smile upon him and that his faith '''shall be''' perfect, and that the blessings promised '''shall be''' realized. |}

====The word "shall" was changed to "may"====

The majority of the changes alter a phrase like "shall" to a phrase like "may." The critics presumably wish to mislead the unwary into concluding that the initial version gave unconditional promises or prophecies, while the ''History of the Church'' version adds a conditional aspect. Yet, the critics are simply ignorant of word usage in the early 1800s. Webster's 1828 dictionary noted of "shall":

<blockquote>
</blockquote>

In fact, the ordination given to Brigham Young on the same day includes similar promises, but usually uses "may" instead of "shall." Since Brigham's blessing was given by Martin Harris, while Orson's was given by Oliver Cowdery, this difference is probably best explained by the habits in language between the two men. (Compare [[Revelation after Joseph Smith/David Whitmer/Brigham Young ordination blessing|Brigham Young ordination blessing]].) Latter-day Saints do not believe that such blessings are generally word-for-word dictation from God, but instead are the speaker's best attempt to put into words the information communicated to them by the Holy Spirit (e.g., {{s||D&C|1|24}}).

Instead, God gives promises or commands to mortals who may choose to participate or not. As the Lord said elsewhere:

:49 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that when I give a commandment to any of the sons of men to do a work unto my name, and those sons of men go with all their might and with all they have to perform that work, and cease not their diligence, and their enemies come upon them and hinder them from performing that work, behold, it behooveth me to require that work no more at the hands of those sons of men, but to accept of their offerings....<br>51 Therefore, for this cause have I accepted the offerings of those whom I commanded to build up a city and a house unto my name, in Jackson county, Missouri, and were hindered by their enemies, saith the Lord your God. ({{s||D&C|124|49,51}}

{{SeeAlso|Joseph_Smith/Prophecies/David Patten to serve mission|Independence_temple_to_be_built_"in_this_generation"|l2=Independence temple|l1=David Patten to serve a mission}}

====This is simply not a false prophecy====

Critics go further in claiming that the blessing which says that Hyde "shall stand on the earth and bring souls till Christ comes" proves that this is a false prophecy.

But, the blessing nowhere asserts that Hyde will be a mortal until the Second Coming.

<blockquote>
Father Smith and Carlos and brother Partridge, yes, and every other good Saint, are just as busy in the spirit world as you and I are here. They can see us, but we cannot see them unless our eyes were opened. What are they doing there? Thus, faithful apostles would continue their work among the wicked (either as a mortal or among the spirits) until Christ comes.
====Given that Lyman Johnson apostatized and forsook his role in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, any promise made to him in a blessing would have been forfeited====
It is claimed that the ordination blessing given to Lyman Johnson of the Twelve was a false prophecy:

<blockquote>
that he should bear the tidings of salvation to nations, tongues, and people, until the utmost corners of the earth shall hear the tidings; and that he shall be a witness of the things of God to nations and tongues, and that holy angels shall administer to him occasionally; and that no power of the enemy shall prevent him from going forth and doing the work of the Lord; and that he shall live until the gathering is accomplished, according to the holy prophets; and he shall be like unto Enoch; and his faith shall be like unto his; and he shall be called great among all the living; and Satan shall tremble before him; and he shall see the Savior come and stand upon the earth with power and great glory."<ref>{{HC1|vol=2|start=188}}</ref>
</blockquote>

====The promise says nothing about William remaining a mortal on the earth====
It is claimed that the ordination blessing given to William Smith, is an example of false prophecy (the version quoted here is from the original Kirtland Council Minute Book):

<blockquote>
That he may be purified in heart, that he may have communion with God. He shall be preserved and remain on the earth until Christ shall come to take vengeance on the wicked. Confirmed.
</blockquote>

The "spirit world" to which the dead go '''is on earth'''. Brigham Young taught:
